For those of you who don't know, I live in New Orleans. Well, for at least another 2 weeks until I move back to NC. Anyways, when I moved here I discovered that New Olreans has many foods that they are very proud of. One of these being the King Cake, and of course its my favorite. I love this thing. So, its not exactly a cake. Its more of a pastry, like a cinnamon roll. It can have different types of filling, such as strawberry, chocolate, cherry, etc. or it can just be plain. I like the plain type myself. It has a glaze/frosting on top that has Mardi Gras color sprinkles on it. This is the best thing ever. Just picture a relaly good, soft, cinnamon roll. Its soooo good I just can't explain.
Anyways, King Cakes start coming out in January, before Mardi Gras. They make them only at this time, and they make them at Christmas as well. So the tradition is that 1 person brings the cake to work and everyone gets a piece. But there is a plastic baby that is hidden inside the cake. Whoever gets this baby must buy the next King Cake the following week, and this continues until Mardi Gras is over. I love these things, have I mentioned that already?
If you don't live in New Olreans but you still want a King Cake, you guessed it, you can mail order them and they can same day ship it. Its worth the money trust me. You just need to make sure that you buy it from a good place. The best place to buy a King Cake from is in Metairie. Its called Randazzo's. People will go and wait in line for over 2 hours to get these things. They are so fresh and soft, not hard like you get in the grocery stores. As I mentioned, Randazzo's is the best, but you can pretty much buy them anywhere that sells food in New Olreans or the surrounding area.
I will buy one and take a picture so you can see what they really look like.
